What are Tarot Readings?

We've all seen the crazy old lady with a crystal ball reading her tarot cards in a movie or on television. So, let's start there. Tarot has been inaccurately portrayed by religion and the media for years. Rest assured, there's no there's no devil-worshipping or smoke and mirrors here. I'm sure there are people out there who go a little overboard or have bad intentions and if you've ever had that experience, that reader definitely wasn't right for you. In my opinion, tarot is about building trust between the reader and the client. I want you to leave the session with new perspectives and insight. More importantly, you should always feel safe. There can be uncomfortable truths in a reading, but I will always do my best to avoid overwhelming you.

What is a Tarot Deck?

A traditional tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into two sections: 22 major arcana (meaning major mysteries) and 56 minor arcana (meaning minor mysteries). You're probably familiar with the major arcana cards like Death, Lovers, and The Fool. Incase you're already thinking it, don't worry, the death card usually doesn't mean actual death. These cards represent big areas of our lives, like relationships, careers, and life events. The minor arcana are similar to playing cards with four suits: cups, swords, wands, and pentacles. These represent smaller events like your day-to-day routine. Every card has an illustrated picture and symbols that each hold a unique meaning. Nothing too scary about playing cards, right?

Each tarot card has it's own story to tell and will present the message you are meant to hear. Anyone can google the meaning of tarot cards and learn these interpretations. Intuitive readers like myself have a special connection to their deck and usually have their own unique card interpretations of a card. If you've ever had a certain card or archetype pulled or you before, just remember it might mean something different in our reading. Personally, I use a psychic deck, which has similar archetypes to a traditional deck, but the illustrations and words are a bit different. Mine also include chakra cards which help me understand where your energetic blockages are coming from!

What to Expect

I offer a three ways to start a reading. We can do a yes or no question, a non-specific reading (meaning you're open to whatever the cards have to say), or a specific question. You don't have to tell me what the question is if you don't want to! My traditional pull is my preferred method of reading. There is no specific number of cards or time limit that I stop at. I'll read as many as the deck offers for you and this will likely go beyond your single question. This usually shows me a 3 month timeline and give insight to your past, present, and future influences. If you have a specific request, let me know! Readings are flexible, so if you're looking for something off the menu, I can help.

Alright, it's example time! Let's say you're trying to work things out with a recent ex. (You know, that one that you just cant quit?) That's when the universe likes to step in and say, "Hi! There's a great person keeps trying to enter your life and can't because you aren't making space for them." In this case, you'd probably have a lot of relationship-specific cards telling you it's time to let go, move on, and to pay attention to that cutie you met at work! The cards will also tell me a bit more about the other person and their intentions as well. While they want to may be saying "Let's work things out", the cards would show me if they're just wasting your time or maybe moving on to other people.

My job is to interpret the message for you. This includes things we already know about your life (current job, relationships, etc) and often adds a word of advice, caution, or upcoming curveball to look out for. Personally, my deck usually tells me things in three month increments. It also likes to keep certain things hidden from even me, if you aren't supposed to know about it yet. This is usually because we tend to get in our own way after learning about what's coming. Every reading is different, but the goal of a tarot reading is to use the information as a guide to get you where you need to go. No one is a mind reader, myself included. While I do have great intuition and occasional messages come through, it's better to be open to the experience and willing to accept what your guides are trying to tell you. Remember, tarot is just a tool, you have the power to decide what to do with it.
